Thank you!

I would like to thank each of you who has voted for me from the bottom of my heart for having voted for me at the Franko-Elektro Competition for the French Games 2009. Thank you for your support and for believing in me. It was still more than that: believing in our country.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to make it up to the next round. But this is not the end. It has been an all great experience and I encourage each and everyone to dare to dream and dare to make it reality. Do all your best. The rest will follow. Do all that's in your capacity to make your dream come true and only then accept the results - whether good or bad, whether success and failure. And one more thing: there's no such thing as bad thing or failure. It's just the way we look at it.

Napster goes 10

Back in 1999, the Internet was just becoming popular among the Mauritian youth, especially at school. And the Internet was also the new Eldorado. Yahoo! was a leader, as well as Microsoft with MSN. And Google just made it's first appearance.

Then I discovered Napster from friends at Café National Super Cyber cybercafé. It was the program that every youth had to have if he/she were to be musically trendy. It was a very light peer-to-peer program, easy to download and install. It had very few buttons. And it was very simple to use.

I wanted to test-drive it. I wanted to download the song 'It's my life' by Doctor Alban, but ended up with that of Bon Jovi. And soon the latter became the killer song, and is still rated as such today. That song made the charts around the world, hitting 1st place.

My friends who were fans of hard-rock music used Napster to download tons of music of Metallica, Marilyn Manson and Nirvana. They used Napster to download some 5 Gigabytes of music at 128 kbps. Phew! What an astonishing amount. Undoubtedly, they did so at the cybercafé itself, enjoying some kind of broadband.

At home, I could download a song of merely 3 MB at 128 kbps over my 56.6 kbps dial-up connection in just over an hour and very often the songs were always downloaded at 90-99 percent and as a consequence I always 'missed' parts of songs. But still, I managed to download a few hundreds of megabytes of music at that speed. I always envied the Americans who had 128 kpbs ADSL, 512 ADSL and T1 connection lines at that time!

During that time, waiting for a song was of an immense pleasure. No need to buy pirated CDs. We were pirating directly from source! Metallica's, Madonna's and Britney Spears' songs were available for download weeks, even months, before official releases. To our happiness, both ears and pockets.

In around 2000, Metallica and Madonna filed lawsuits for copyright infringement and Napster was closed down to re-open later.

Today, Napster is still considered the first program to have shaken the music industry. Indeed, it has inspired many later applications like BitTorrent, iMesh, eDonkey, eMule, Morpheus and Kazaa, among others.

All other programs or protocols still pose the same 'threat' concerning copyright matters as Napster did. Or is it that the music industry has to re-invent itself and do business differently?

And even today, every mention of Napster makes the music industry tremble. Problems posed by Napster to the music industry are being spread to other media such as books and movies which are all being digitised, ready to download, with an ever-growing world population who's downloading more and more.

All in all, Napster has been revolution. And as with every revolution, there are good sides and not-so-happy consequences.

Happy birthday Napster!

Event 777 coming soon

Liquid's bosses announced the next big clubbing event in Mauritius on last Saturday's DJ's Challenge . After Tom Snare's night, they are bringing Pakito, who's going to perform live at La Citadelle on 7 July 07 (so the name 'Event 777').

DJ Pakito made a phenomenal success with its popular track Living On Video, very famous in Mauritius, last year.

I hope to get going once again. And I hope that the event will be held at La Citadelle itself, not VIP Club at the last minute, as it has been the case for DJ Laurent Wolf, on Saturday last.

DJ's Challenge at Caudan

I was at the DJ's Challenge organised by Liquid on Saturday last at Le Caudan Waterfront with some friends from college.

There was a nice atmosphere and many DJ's perform really well. Each DJ had to mix a number of tracks in a certain amount of time. DJ Giovanni Paul and DJ Bernard Desmarais, Liquid's founders, and DJ Master L, who performs Liquid's Essential Mix each Saturday night on Kool FM as from 21.00, formed part of the jury.

After each participant, the members of the jury explained how good the mix was and explained how the DJ's were given points. That's very interesting for to-be DJ's since it was a pleasure to see how to evaluate mixes.

Basically, the jury talked about

  • frequency -beats
  • effects - flanger, echo, equaliser
  • beat-matching
As far as I know, these are the very foundation for the perfect mix!

Tom Snare live in Mauritius

Tom Snare is a French association of DJ Steed, guitarist Steve Watt and producer Xavier De Canter. They play techno, dance and electro music. Tom Snare's first album Tom Snare's World was released in October this year (2006). It contains the following 16 tracks:

  1. Waterfalls (Radio Edit)
  2. Philosophy (song)
  3. My Mother Says
  4. Homeworld
  5. Electro Choc
  6. Love Sensation
  7. Lick It
  8. Running (I Can't Stop Loving You)
  9. Rock On You
  10. Fashion Avenue
  11. More Than A Surprise
  12. No Dreams
  13. Philosophy (Le Remix)
  14. My Mother Says (Extended Mix)
  15. Waterfalls (Electro Extended Mix)
  16. My Mother Says (My Piano Mix)
The group has made a phenomenal success with the track Philosophy. A second album is to get out soon.

The group is ranked 1564 on TheDJList.com.

On Saturday 2nd December, Liquid and The Hippies organised a fantastic techno night with guest DJ Tom Snare (DJ Steed) at La Citadelle, Mauritius. The event was broadcast live on Kool FM's Liquid/Essential Kool Mix.

I was happy to attend since I obtained a Liquid key-holder and nice discount at all Liquid shops.

There was a long warm-up session by DJ Prakash Samputh, DJ Patrice D'Avrincourt, DJ Giovanni Paul and DJ Bernard Desmarais prior to the world star DJ session.

The music was really nice and nicer when DJ Steed got his hands on the mixer. I should say that mixing is DJ Tom Snare's second nature. He's in always in phase with the track that he's mixing and he makes the audience feel the music. I should admit that Tom Snare will soon be among the world's top DJs and that his ranking will climb considerably. DJ Tom Snare even presented us with an exclusive track that they will be releasing shortly.

Here are some pictures which I took:

More pictures of the night are available here.

Cascada's Everyime We Touch

While surfing the net, I came across Cascada's Everytime We Touch track. It aroused my interest for the artist since it falls into the trance category. I downloaded the album for preview and I instantly fell in love with the artist and the album. I even love the tracks that are not trance!

Everytime We Touch features 14 magnificent tracks that are worth listening. I am sure that it will suit all those who like dance and trance music. It also features Savage Garden's Truly Madly Deeply, with Cascada's beautiful voice. Here's the tracklist:

01 - Everytime We Touch
02 - How Do You Do
03 - Bad Boy
04 - Miracle
05 - Another You
06 - Ready For Love
07 - Can't Stop the Rain
08 - Kids in America
09 - A Never Ending Dream
10 - Truly Madly Deeply
11 - One More Night
12 - Wouldn't It Be Good
13 - Love Again
14 - Everytime We Touch (Yanou Candlelight Mix)

Her picture gallery and tour dates are available on her official web site. Her blog features testimonials from many MySpace users. Her lyrics may be found here.

We should also give credit to the two producers/DJs who made the superb music - Yanou and DJ Manian. Cascada's real name is Natalie Horler. All of them are German. More.

The music's style makes me think of Alice Deejay, the first trance group that I loved (though their styles are somewhat different). I appreciated Better Off Alone, Will I Ever and Back In My Life, amongst others. Unfortunately, the Dutch group is no more on the scenes. Alice Deejay comprises of producers Pronti, Kalmani and DJ Jurgen. Judith Pronk gives the melodious voice, accompanied by Gaby and Jane. More.

Note: Now, I just want to buy the original album. That is a pain in Mauritius since stores don't yet sell her disks. I hope that I may soon do so before I listen to the album so many times that I would no longer consider this option.
